5th annual McDowell Mountain Music Festival in AZ this weekend!

Gov't Mule, John Butler Trio, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, Blues Traveler to headline!!!

  • McDowell Mountain Music Festival - Saturday review - finally!

After a beautiful night camping under the stars at Westworld, I got up eager to start the second day of live music being offered by McDowell Mountain Music Festival.

Saturday started out much warmer – although it could have just been my incredibly bad sunburn that I started the day before talking to me…yes – even in just an hour time, the AZ sun can leave a pretty good mark on you!  Sunscreen is vital!!!

So, I meandered over to the stage pretty early so that I could be sure to check out the 2 local AZ acts…

Peppermint James started off to the small crowd, but quickly got everyone on their feet!  Their Beatles influence was definitely evident, and they even delved into a bit of the Wailers.  The Mojo Farmers came on next, and you could tell that a lot of locals were looking forward to hearing one of their favorites…and the people that traveled from far and wide to see the festival were also pleasantly surprised by them.  The two guitarists, Bill Baker and Chris Losey, blew me away!  I have heard their albums, which are incredible, but I have always preferred live music…and the Mojo Farmers never fail to deliver in their live performances!  What a way to start off the day!

Toubab Krewe stepped in to an already pumped up crowd!  And they kept the groove going!  They are an instrumental band from North Carolina that performs with some of the most intriguing instruments I have ever seen!  With a heavy West African influence, they provided an hour and a half of pure dance bliss!  I was mesmerized and couldn’t take my eyes off the stage because I have never witnessed anything like them before!  I would love to see this band back next year – maybe at a later time slot!  They definitely deserve it!

I took a walk over to the campsite just to take a break from the sun and get some water.  It was about a half an hour later that my neighbor came back ranting and raving about JJ Grey & MOFRO!  The nice thing about the campsite at MMMF is that it’s still pretty close to the stage…for the most part, you can hear all the music clear as day right from your tent…but all you can see is the back of the stage.  So, I walked back in with my friend and found out why a huge crowd had gathered at the front of the stage.  JJ Grey is a remarkable singer and lyricist, and he is backed by an incredible band.  If you listen and can get past the funky grooves and melodies, you will hear some of the most vivid storytelling in JJ Grey’s lyrics.  It’s this combination that makes me yearn for more and I can’t wait to catch them again!

As the day finally started to cool off, and the sun was going down in the sky it was time for the Wailers to come on stage and heat things up again!  Lead singer Elan Atias’s voice bore a very strong resemblance to Bob Marley!  No one could ever take his place, but Elan does a fantastic job of stepping in to share the words and spirit of Bob Marley!  And the audience was definitely feeling it!  They played some noteworthy stuff off their new album, but the crowd was really interested in hearing the staples of the Wailers, such as “Get Up, Stand Up”, “Jamming”, and “Stir it Up”.

As night finally fell upon us, it set the perfect atmosphere for Blues Traveler to take the stage!  I’m sure if you mention Blues Traveler to anyone, the song that first comes to mind is “Run-Around”.  It’s a great song, but they are an established band that has been performing for many years.  They deserve an immense amount of credit for what they have done for the jam scene, and more-over, the music scene in general.  I cannot think of another person that can wail on the harmonica like John Popper!  When I finally pull my jaw up off the ground, I can truly appreciate what he is doing on stage!  At this point I had moved back in the crowd so I would have plenty of room to dance, but I could certainly still feel his energy!  I don’t think these guys are going anywhere anytime soon!  They have many years ahead of them to entertain us all!  Go out and check out their shows!  You won’t be disappointed!

And to bring this amazing, little-known festival to a close – no other than the John Butler Trio.  I know a lot of people were questioning the decision to make them the headliner for Saturday night, but I think it was the perfect choice!  What the guys from John Butler Trio do on stage is visually simple, but it’s a feast for the ears!  It’s hard to believe that just 3 musicians make a sound that is so complex and complete…I had to keep looking up to make sure there were only 3 of them on stage…truly inspirational!  They far exceed the sound on their studio albums during their live performance – and man can they jam!  It’s easy to get lost in their music, as well as John Butler’s fine lyrics!  I wish they could have gone on until 3 a.m., but the festival had to come to an end…

And, as we all headed out to our campsites, the wind picked up…and no one had any idea what kind of night we were in for!  I think the wind held up at over 50 miles an hour for most of the night, and when I woke up around 5 to start breaking down camp, the grounds looked very similar to last year after the dust storm moved through.  Many people had to poke through all of the stuff that had been blown against the fence to try to get some of their gear back…crazy indeed, but it is just another story to tell and it made it an even bigger adventure!  I can’t wait for next year!  Kudos to the fine folks at Wespac for putting on such a remarkable event!

  • McDowell Mountain Music Festival - Friday review!

I arrived at MMMF on Friday morning just after 8 a.m.  After getting through the campground check-in (which was a bear this year), we made our way to our camping spots…in less than an hour, we had our whole campsite setup and we were ready to start mingling!

2 local bands started off the festival early Friday afternoon.  Mikel Lander & Meridith Moore w/ Friends played the first slot and brought a pleasant mix of jazz, blues and funk.  Meridith pulled me in with her strong vocals and Mikel kept me dancing with his smooth guitar playing.  It was really fun to see some swing dancers up on stage with them as they performed!  One of the highlights was when they played an impressive cover of Curtis Mayfield’s “People Get Ready”.  The Steve Reynolds band followed and the horns definitely intrigued me and got me on my feet!  I really enjoyed “Mission Temple Fireworks Stand” – originally by Paul Thorn.  The subdudes from New Orleans were up next and performed a short set due to some technical difficulties.  I was impressed with their sound so I was upset when they ended as I was having a great time dancing!  Looking out around the crowd, it seems everyone was definitely enjoying themselves!  Fantastic weather, groovy music, and wonderful friends!  Who could ask for more!

I also noticed the anticipation building for Grace Potter and the Nocturnals!  They were the only band that was invited back after their performance last year and their name came up quite a bit in conversations I had with all my friends about what artists they were most excited to see this year…and, they did not disappoint!

Let me tell you – there is nothing sexier than a beautiful woman that can wail on a Hammond organ, guitar, and tambourine (not all at the same time of course!) while singing with one of the most soulful voices I have heard in a long time!  I think my fiancé may have been a bit jealous!  J  They worked the crowd by playing a mix of songs from their newest album (“Stop the Bus” was very nice) along with some known songs off their earlier albums.  “Treat Me Right” and “Joey” were definite standouts for me!  For the second year, Grace and the boys were incredible and made a life-long fan out of me!  I can see why bands like Phil Lesh & Friends, the Black Crowes, and Dave Matthews Band want this group opening for them this summer!!

Let me break from my review of the music to mention the scenery…I can’t even begin to describe the beautiful backdrop to the stage!  The McDowell Mountains were stunning as they turned almost purple as the sun set.  And the break from the sun was nice and seemed to put everyone in an even better mood – if that’s possible!

Robert Randolph and the Family Band came out and kept the energy level to the sky!  From the moment Mr. Randolph sat down at his pedal steel, it was non-stop dancing time!  Chock full of funk and soul, the band knows how to entertain!  I have never seen anyone enjoy themselves more on stage than Robert Randolph – at one point, laying down on his chair and throwing his legs up in the air!  Always a smile on his face!  He worked the crowd into a frenzy playing “The March”, “Shake Your Hips” and closing the set with “Ain’t Nothing Wrong With That”.

The headliner for the day was Gov’t Mule with Warren Haynes.  Definitely rock-n-roll at it’s finest; the boys of Gov’t Mule also infuse blues and jazz into their set.  You can definitely see the band playing off each other as they play.  It almost seems at times that they are not even aware of the large audience in front of them…they almost get lost in the music…and I’m almost glad they are because it makes it that much better!  They are just really into the music and I can feel it and it draws me in even more!  I was happily surprised to hear Hunger Strike with a slight segue into “Dear Mr. Fantasy” in the middle. Grace Potter and guitarist Scott Tournet of the Nocturnals joined the band on stage for a blazing rendition of Al Green’s “Take Me to the River.  Another special moment was when Robert Randolph came on stage to jam with the boys on “Soulshine” to finish out the evening.  Gov’t Mule will outlast the test of time with their huge guitar riffs and stand-out jams.

Stay tuned for my review of the Saturday lineup!  Sorry it’s taking me so long to get these reviews done!  It’s definitely a lot harder than I thought!  J  But, with more and more practice I’ll be able to churn these reviews out in no time!  J

  • Just a very brief writeup of MMMF this past weekend! More to come tomorrow!

So...I got back home this morning from the crazy weekend known as McDowell Mountain Music Festival! What a ride! And, I'm not just referring to the music! There was a crazy wind storm overnight last night...started just at the tail end of John Butler Trios set and went right on through the night! The campground looked mighty reminiscent of the campgrounds last year after the monsoon! So many tents and shade structures demolished!!! But still - what a crazy experience!!!

I will give more in-depth reviews tomorrow (i'm extremely tired and definitely need to get some sleep)...but I wanted to let you all know that Grace Potter and the Nocturnals and Robert Randolph & the Family Band were my standouts for Friday, and JJ Grey & MOFRO and the John Butler Trio were my standouts for Saturday!  The local bands gave fantastic performances and I know that they will at least double their fanbase just based on their sets at MMMF this weekend!

I will also have tons of pics to share!  So, keep your eyes open for them!

    More to follow tomorrow!

  • MMMF - It's about that time - gonna start packing up my camping gear for the weekend ahead!

As a resident of the state of Arizona, I feel we sometimes get quite neglected when it comes to great national music acts.  I often have to travel to Colorado or California to see a live show of any of the bands I love…so, it’s with great anticipation that I tell you about the 5th annual McDowell Mountain Music Festival, which takes place this weekend (4/25 & 4/26) at Westworld Polo Grounds in Scottsdale, AZ.  Gates open at 12 noon on Friday.  The music begins at 1:30 p.m. and will continue until 11 p.m.  If you plan on arriving early on Friday, don’t miss the Hooky Happy Hour inside Fender Village from 2-7 p.m.!  Some people might go just for the wine and tequila tasting, or the free appetizers from Salty Senorita – but I have a feeling most people will go to enjoy some air conditioning while listening to some great acoustic music!  On Saturday, gates open at 10 a.m.  The music starts at 11 a.m. and will continue until 11 p.m.  If you take advantage of the on-site camping (RV and tent), you won’t have to travel far after the music ends!

General Admission tickets are $55 per day (or $95 if you buy a 2 day pass).  VIP passes are $200 per day and include unlimited food, 12 drink tickets, access to poser deck (side-stage), private restrooms, and comfy seating and shaded areas!   The price of admission is definitely well worth all the activities this festival has to offer!!  Speaking of shade – the weather is supposed to be beautiful!  It’s supposed to be sunny with blue skies both days and temps in the upper 90s (don’t forget your sunscreen)!!  Last year, an incredible dust storm moved through Saturday afternoon.  Although it caused a brief pause in the live music, the show went on after the storm and everyone had an amazing time!

They are expecting about 10,000 attendees this year, which makes this a smaller, more intimate festival.  You can really get as close to the stage as you want!!!  There will be a great variety of music which will showcase well-known national acts, as well as 4 local AZ bands!  You can get your fill of anything from rock & roll to soul…from reggae to bluesy funk.  And just wait until John Popper starts blowing on that harmonica!  You’re in for a treat!!!

Every festival always has one or two surprises for me…the surprise for me last year at MMMF was Grace Potter and the Nocturnals!  I couldn’t be happier to see them back on the lineup this year!  You’ll see what I mean as soon as she opens her mouth to start singing (if you haven’t been lucky enough to see them live previously).  There are 2 bands playing this year that I haven’t had the privilege of seeing live yet: Robert Randolph & the Family Band, and the John Butler Trio.  I am very familiar with their music and I have heard amazing things about their live performances, so I can’t wait to witness it with my own eyes and ears!

Here is the lineup for the festival so you can be sure to catch your favorite bands!

The best thing about this festival, besides all the terrific music acts, is the fact that all the proceeds go to charity!  This year, the two charities are Phoenix Day (http://phoenixday.org) and Golden Gate Community Center (http://www.goldengatecenter.org).  So, get out and support great live music while giving to some wonderful charities!

I can’t wait to see you all there!!!
